Most portals (including the open source Apache Jetspeed 2 portal) are customizable using a set of skins, or themes, that provide look and feel. The HTML and style sheets for the portal are contained in the skin. The layout of the initial portal page the users will get when they log in is usually customizable through the administration tool. Many users will not customize the layout of this page, even if allowed, so an effective design is important. Determine which applications or content sources are going to be used most often (e-mail, human resources, engineering documents, etc.). Build prototypes of the proposed screens, and let users interact with the portal functionality. From a technical perspective, changing the portal layout or look and feel after deployment is very simple, but the end users may require additional training and

Going back to our boat sample, we can now build an interface for all powered vehicles, which could be implemented by a motorcycle or an aircraft. If SpeedBoat implements this interface, then the prototypes for the engine functions are available to it. First of all, you declare an interface as a prototyped set of JavaScript functions that you then register as interfaces using the registerInterface command. Here s an example:

E-mail is a very familiar environment for almost all users, and the need for the protection of private messages is obvious. We suggest that you consider this example as you encounter the security technologies available to you when building a portlet.

Generally, a portlet passively receives user authentication and authorization information from the container. It is often not necessary for your portlet to directly establish the identity of the user. As a result, when designing a simple secured portlet to be entirely portable, you need only concern yourself with the way that your portlet interacts with its security environment. This holds true only when a portal has its own access control for portlets, either on a per-user or per-group basis. Some portals allow a user to add any installed portlet to the user s portal page. Most portal deployments require some kind of security or access control for administrative portlets. This can be accomplished by allowing only certain users or sets of users to show a portlet on their page, or by having the portlet code check the user s information to determine what they are allowed to view.

After you select an employee ID, the details of that employee (first name, last name, home phone, and notes) are displayed in the text boxes. The Insert, Update, and Delete buttons perform the respective operations. All the operations INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE are performed on the DataSet and not against the actual database table. After all the operations are completed, you can click the Save button to make all the changes in the actual database. The application uses the Employees table of the famous Northwind database. Now let s dissect the application step by step and see how DataSet and DataAdapter have been put to use.
