This chapter detailed the extensions to JavaScript that are provided by the ASP.NET AJAX extensions. You first looked at the programmer productivity enhancements brought about by the object-oriented extensions to JavaScript that provide for the ability to create classes. On top of this, the standard object-oriented methodologies of namespaces, inheritance, interfaces, and reflection were discussed. Additionally in this chapter, you looked into what is available to programmers using arrays, Boolean values, dates, errors, numbers, and strings in ASP.NET AJAX. With these tools on your belt, and with the server controls and services from previous chapters, you are now armed to go out and start building real-world applications using ASP .NET AJAX!

Next we create a context object to represent the authentication that is to be carried out. The username and password of the client principal are required here to obtain a Principal object. In your portlets you are able to retrieve a principal by invoking the getUserPrincipal() method, so no knowledge of the password is required. For the remote machine, however, we need to specify only the name of the principal. The authenticity of the server will be established with the GSS handshake:

The simplicity of developing the stock quote application proves the power that ASP.NET affords you as a web developer. Some fairly complex stuff was going on behind the scenes, enabling you to focus on the business logic for your application, instead of all the underlying plumbing necessary to get it to work. Figure 2-22 shows how the underlying ASP.NET components all work together in an ASP .NET application. At the bottom of the figure, you see the host operating system on which the web server runs. The web server for ASP.NET can be Cassini or IIS. The web server receives the incoming request from the browser and passes it to the ASP.NET runtime, which sits on top of the operating system. This runtime can use a global application file, called Global.asax, to manage functions that are central to your web site. A number of modules are available to the runtime for handling sessions, authentication, and caching. Finally, your application or web service sits on top of these modules and executes. Upon executing, it generates HTML markup that gets passed back to the process that initiated the request through the web server.

In the stock quote application, when the web browser requested the page from the server, the server recognized the .aspx page name extension as an ASP.NET page, and passed the request to the ASP.NET runtime, which processed the ASP.NET code and returned the output to the client. Take a look back at Listing 2-1, where the page was defined using extended HTML. If you look at the code being rendered by the browser (by selecting View Source from your browser when viewing the Default.aspx page), you ll see something different. Take a look at Listing 2-2.

In the preceding example, we created an XmlDataDocument by using a DataSet, but you can also create an XmlDataDocument by using an XML document. In the latter case, you can use the Load() method of XmlDataDocument. This method works the same way as with the XmlDocument class (see 2). You can then use the loaded XML data in a relational manner with the help of the DataSet property of the XmlDataDocument class.

Sometimes you may need to access the XML element belonging to a DataRow from the DataSet. This can be achieved by using the GetElementFromRow() method of XmlDataDocument. This method accepts a reference to a DataRow instance from the DataSet and returns an XmlElement corresponding to that row. The working of the GetElementFromRow() method will be clear when you develop the application shown in Figure 7-21.
