Most portals provide a GUI for modifying the elements of a portlet deployment descriptor for the portlets deployed on the portal server. Some also provide a portlet application assembly tool to help create the deployment descriptor. For configuration settings that are stored on a per-user basis, the portlet can use preferences for storage, as you ll see in the next section.

Portlets can save the user s preferences to a persistent store that is managed by the portal or portlet container. Instead of storing the user s settings in a database or in text files, you use portal preferences for portable storage. Portals may implement a shared preferences database between clustered portal servers, so portlets could access preferences for a user from any server in the cluster. In some portals, we can do this by sharing the preferences database. The preferences a portlet uses may be described in the portlet.xml deployment descriptor, but it is not necessary. Portlets can set any preferences they choose, even if they are not defined in the deployment descriptor. The deployment descriptor is used to provide defaults for the preference values, as well as to mark a portlet preference as read-only. The portlet cannot change the value of a read-only preference in the normal portlet modes, although it is possible that a portal server could provide a custom mode that allows read-only preferences to be changed.

In connected data access, you establish a connection with the database. Then, as long as you are working with the data, you maintain this live connection. The following are the steps that you typically take when using connected data access: 1. Establish a connection with the database. 2. Fetch a set of records in a cursor. 3. Work with the fetched data (perform read, modify, and delete operations or even calculations). 4. Update the database, if there are any changes. 5. Close the database connection.

Preferences are name/value pairs. The names of the preferences are String objects, and the values of the preferences are stored as arrays of String objects. The advantage of this model is that you can see changes in the database in real time. However, this approach is not recommended for scalable applications because it can hamper the overall performance and scalability of the system. Also, even though ADO.NET provides cursor-oriented connected data access, it is strictly read-only and forward-only. This incurs fewer overheads and improves performance as compared to updatable cursors. You will typically use connected data access in the following situations: You are developing applications that are online all the time. For example, in a ticket reservation application it is necessary that you work with the latest data from the database. In such cases, connected data access becomes necessary. You want to avoid the overhead of using offline data. When you use queries directly against a database, naturally they bypass any of the intermediate layers that are involved in disconnected data-access techniques. For example, suppose that you wish to display a simple employee listing to the end user. This task does not involve any processing as such. Using connected data access in such cases will of course give the best performance. You need a cursor model for some reason. The Connection, Command, and DataReader classes are used for such connected data access. You will learn about these classes in later sections.
